DAT’s goal is to provide a trusted and safe marketplace for carriers, brokers, and shippers.

To maintain transparency and integrity across our network, all companies presenting themselves as carriers must have an active USDOT number on file and displayed on their account to be eligible for DAT services.

Our Network Governance team validates all information in accordance with our Acceptable Use Policy. In some cases, they may reach out by phone to verify identity and qualifications through a compliance audit.

If you need to update or apply for operating authority, contact our team at 800-547-5417 for assistance.

Below are the main carrier types allowed on DAT and the requirements to remain in good standing:

Intrastate Carriers

DAT requires an active USDOT number on file.

Cargo Vans, Sprinters, and LTL

A USDOT number is required to use DAT, even if it is not legally required to haul freight in your state. This requirement reflects the qualifications many brokers set before moving loads. To obtain a USDOT:

Third-Party Dispatchers (Carrier Dispatch Service Providers)

Dispatchers represent multiple carriers, but DAT requires each account to be tied to a single carrier’s USDOT. To qualify:

  • The dispatcher must be added as a user to the carrier’s DAT account.
  • Dispatchers cannot create standalone accounts, set up accounts on behalf of carriers, or pay for services on their behalf.
  • To get started, have your client (the carrier) set up their DAT account. Once active, they can add you as a user through the self-service portal.
